 Animal Husbandry (Farms), Mattewara (Ludhiana)

Animal Husbandry Farms, Mattewara is a composite unit working with the sole aim of breed improvement of the Buffalo, Sheep and Goat of the state of Punjab by producing high genetic potential purebreds and thus, contributing immensely to the breed improvement of the livestock pool of the state as a whole. The various farms operational at Mattewara are under the leadership of Deputy Director Animal Husbandry (Farms) Mattewara, the office of whom is situated at 30.976513, 75.978732 (https://goo.gl/maps/WQ9W18NqGeB2). Various farms operational at Mattewara are as follows.

·        Government Buffalo Breeding Farm, Mattewara

Government Buffalo Breeding Farm is run at Mattewara with the aim of producing high genetic potential purebred male buffalo calves to be supplied to the state run semen banks where they can be used to harvest/produce semen and then processed into semen straws to be supplied to the state veterinary service institutions for artificial insemination of the livestock and thus, improving genetic potential of the livestock of the whole state and promoting breed improvement/ purebred culture in the state. The female calves produced at the farm are kept at the farm itself where they are reared and then inseminated artificially by expert staff in order to produce higher genetic potential offspring. At present, this farm is focussing on breed improvement of Murrah breed of buffaloes.

·        Government Sheep Breeding Farm, Mattewara

Government Sheep Breeding Farm is working towards upliftment of sheep breeders of the state by providing them high genetic potential purebred exotic breed males for breed improvement of their flock. The high genetic potential males are supplied to sheep breeders/farmers of the state at subsidized rates whereas, females produced at the farm are reared at the farm itself for obtaining purebred offspring. Currently, two exotic sheep breeds, namely, Rambouillet and Poll Dorset are reared at the farm.

·        Government Goat Breeding Farm, Mattewara

Government Goat Breeding Farm is working towards upliftment of goat breeders of the state by providing them high genetic potential purebred males for breed improvement of their flock. The high genetic potential males are supplied to goat breeders/farmers of the state at subsidized rates whereas, females produced at the farm are reared at the farm itself for obtaining purebred offspring. Currently, indigenous goat breed Beetal is reared at the farm.

·        Government Cattle Farm (Agriculture Section), Garhi Fazal

This section is the lifeline of Buffalo Breeding Farm, Mattewara; as this section meets the green fodder, hay, silage and straw requirements of the breeding farm as required for the animal production and management.

·        Government Sheep Farm (Agriculture Section), Mattewara

The agriculture section of the Sheep Farm is run in order to support the sheep and goat breeding/rearing activities of the Breeding Farms. This section is the lifeline of Sheep Breeding Farm and Goat Breeding Farm as this section meets green fodder, hay, etc. needs of the farm for animal production.

·        Government Seed Farm, Seikhowal

Government Seed Farm acts as a lifeline for the agriculture section of the Animal Husbandry Farms Mattewara, thus, acting as a foundation stone for the functioning of all the farms. The main aim of this section is to produce fodder crops seed approved by the government in order to provide seed to agriculture sections of the Farms and providing surplus seed to the dairy farmers of the state at subsidized rates via Tehsil Level Civil Veterinary Hospitals of the state.
